baptism vs birth
Perhaps it would be a good idea to eliminate the birth record, just using the baptismal record which includes both. That way, when someone forgets or overlooks the baptismal dates, they can just be added, instead of reindexing, or if they mistake one for the other, they can be corrected more easily.

In the part of the world where my ancestors lived, before the latter half of the 1800s, most church registers record only the date of the sacrament (baptism, burial), not of the vital event (birth, death) that led to it.

Same in the area where my families lived - only in the late 19th century and early 20th do we start to see a birth date on a baptismal record.

It sounds like you are strictly speaking about indexing projects. Is that what you actually are talking about? If so, are there specific indexing projects where you see a problem that not indexing birth information would solve?

@Deanna Slade Gordon makes a very good point, the more information you can give us around the problem the better.
