Women's profession 1860
In looking at the 1860 census for Cook's District, Fulton County, Georgia, I found a 69 year old woman whose profession is listed as "P". She has two daughters living with her, both in their 30s, and they both have ditto marks on their profession lines. The only other person in the home is a 7 year old girl. Professions of people nearby are M.D., med student, station keeper, cabinet maker, carpenter, painter, miller, grocer, and wagoner in addition to farmers and laborers, so I assume they lived in or near town. There is a woman listed on the next page whose profession is listed as "Widow Pros". Now, I'm assuming all four of these women were prostitutes. Is there anything I'm missing? Is there any other profession the census taker could have meant by writing "P" for the 69 year old woman and her daughters?

P represents Poor, or Pauper, in English parish registers and other records. I would scroll further through Fulton County records to see if there are any other instances of this nature (to find how it ("P") might have been applied elsewhere).
