Indexing a marriage register, I have indexed the first column with the Male being the principal person, the second column on the same page lists the female name first, do I now switch and put the Female name as the principal person? These surnames are in Alphabetical order

    Hello JoDeeChild,

The project Instructions, on What to index , has an image of Marriage Registers ; it indicates how to index this type of document.

This is just an index to marriage registers (see the heading on the document) and shows which register to find those particular marriage records. Instructions say not to index indexes, however they also say that indexes don't have a date. Many of these indexes do have years. I, personally, don't think they should be indexed. It's just an index saying where to find the marriage records. But someone asked Family Search and they said to index them.

Anyway... the instructions don't say which party to use as the pricipal, but usually it's the groom. I would still index the groom as the principal when the bride is named first because only the spouse has a field for a prefix, the reason probably being that she could have a Mrs. before her name.
