Why do completed names disappear after two years?
These could potentially be useful for finding new leads in the future ...

I once heard Ron Tanner say that FS did not want this to be a competition amongst users as to who was doing the most ordinances. That just makes no sense to me. But maybe I'm missing something?

You meant completed ordinances. The maximum is 2 years OR 3,000.
I already have the maximum of 3,000 completed ordinances. Every new completed ordinance, the oldest one get kicked off.
What competition?
That is why I maintain a backup to my own program and did you know you can download the list if you don't want to lose anything.
