Merging records marked "read only"

I am trying to help someone whose husband was an only child. He passed away last year. She is trying to merge all the duplicate records that are now showing for him (at least 6) and whenever she tries to merge them she gets the message: "Both of these people have a relationship with a read-only person." What do we do to get these records to merge? Is there a way to do this?
