How do you index vital records from Virginia that have a name and year on them?

Are they death or birth records? How do we find out?

    Hi Arlea Carmack, If you share your batch code with us then we can actually see the batch you are working on and try to give you a good answer.

    The batch code is the group of letters and numbers at the end of your batch title, looking something like this X31J-X34. Just copy that and paste it here with your Question.

    Arlea Carmack Sorry I took so long.

    Your batch is in a group with the following title:

    Marriage Registers 1782-1853, Campbell County, Virginia: Campbell. Marriage Registers 1782–1853

    No, because there are all three areas represented in the batch. The birth records I assume are the ones with a birthdate and the person’s name. Some birth and marriage records are titled. The register with just a year and name could be birth or death? It is just what appears to be women’s names.

    @Arlea Carmack

    I have looked at the batch you listed but I am unable to reference the records either side of the one shown. Sometimes, by scrolling through the ones before and after this record, details can emerge which confirm the record type.

    For me, with no substantiated reason, these look to be a rewritten list of burials, with just a year, first and last names recorded, but if you are unsure in yourself, return the batch for another indexer to complete.

    Hi, Arlea Carmack and BarryJohnson,

    I used the batch image name ref #, 007578854, found under About Batch at the top of the page to look up the original film group to find the information I gave above.

    If you go to the document you find that it is a marriage register and that this particular batch, which is image #136, is part of an index for the register. You are correct it is only women's names in this part of the index.

    Francis Jones was married in 1803. If you want further information concerning Francis you go to page 92 of the register. On page 92, which is image #63, you find that Francis was married to Wm. Jordan Jr on the 7th of October in 1803.

    I was able to find Anna Jones which is the second name in the same manner.

    Hope this helps.

    Enjoy your indexing😊
