Civil War pension packets often contain extensive details about family, especially if multiple members of the same family fought in the same unit.

@annawagenhoffer, you are going to have to give more information to have any hope that someone can help you. At least post the PID.

Maybe a trip to your local Family History Center would be a good start for you? Find one from the Link below:

@annawagenhoffer Here are a few suggestions to help with researching your Civil War soldier from New Jersey.

The FamilySearch Research wiki will help you learn about what kind of records are available and how to access them. You can access the wiki by clicking Search and choosing Research Wiki from the dropdown menu. Check out this article called "New Jersey in the Civil War."

The federal archives is responsible for the military records of the North from the Civil War. Their "Soldiers and Sailors Database" is a good place to start searching the names of your ancestors. Click "Soldiers" and type in your ancestor's name.

Many public libraries and also Family History Centers can provide free access to a subscription site called, Fold3.com. Many of the records held by the National Archives are indexed and images available on this site.

Civil War pension packets are also often to be found on Fold3. As Karen mentioned, you can access Fold3 at many libraries or Family History Centers. The cost of an annual subscription to Fold3 is less than you will pay to order the same civil war pension packet from the National Archives.
