HELP - TOTAL MASH UP on Indexing batch
I started to do ''US, New York, Chemung—Indexes to Mortgagees, 1630–1975 [Part A] [M3YG-ZDC]"" --- a 99
It is a 99 line index BUT whoever did it compleley reversed the Mortgagees with the Mortgagors --- is there a way, short of just starting over, to correct this???
I am returning this batch because it gave me a headache to even begin this. I am asking for future reference!!
Thanks for the help

There is no way to correct this. I would probably delete the indexed information before sending it back for reindexing so as not to confuse the next indexer and have them re-submit the batch as correct.

I have found several batches with the mortgagees and mortgagors reversed in the other NY land record projects as well . One other problem is that some indexers are not indexing the second page I have corrected and submitted the batches .

Hi@Cassady, Holleen Hope and @Donna Galipeau --- if you decide to return a batch, check out the info in the snip below - the highlighted item gives you choices of whether to keep the indexed info or not

I have come across this problem in other similar projects.
When I open a batch to review it in one of these projects where there are two columns with a reversed order in the second column the first thing I do is check to see if the indexer did not notice that and thus did not do the swap.
If there are a lot of entries that need to be swapped I just send it back to be Reindexed, deleting the information of course. I know that may seem harsh, but there is no way to only delete the offending entries.
If there are just a few entries then I do this. Tab through the four field that need to be swapped; click on the field before the first field that needs to be swapped and tab into that field; press the Delete key, a list will drop down, the first name in the list should be the one that belongs in this field; press Enter/Return; in the next field press Delete, a list will appear, again the first entry should be the desired one, press Enter/Return; tab to the next name field, press Delete, the list will appear, the correct name will be the second or later in the list, press the down arrow key to select it and press Enter/Return; in the next field press Delete, the list will appear, the correct name will be the second or later in the list, the correct name will be the second or later in the list, press the down arrow key to select it and press Enter/Return.
This procedure allows the information to be swapped without needing to retype it, except in the cases where the given name is only initials, in those cases they will need to be retyped.

Yes, it would be wonderful if indexers completely read and understood the project instructions. I may be pessimistic but I am not holding my breath until they do.
One thing that may help is to enable "Reasons to Reindex Batch" in Labs (https://www.familysearch.org/indexing/labs). When this is enabled the the modal box that appears when a batch is returned to be reindexed has more check boxes that explain why the it needs to be reindexed, including several that indicate that the Indexer does not understand the instructions clearly.
The Labs page can be opened with the above link (I recommend bookmarking it so you don't have to open a batch to get to it) or through the Help menu when a batch is open (click Help; in the dropdown menu select Labs).
On the Labs page click the check box labeled "Reasons to Reindex Batch". For this to work correctly when a batch is being returned to be reindexed "Reasons to Reindex Batch" must be enabled when the batch is opened. If the batch that needs to be returned is already open when you enable "Reasons to Reindex Batch", it needs to be closed and reopened (return to the Indexing tool tab and click the Return to Web Indexing arrow on the Tool bar to close the batch; click Open Batch to open it again). Now when you choose the Reindex Batch item on the Batch dropdown menu the modal box that appears will now have the additional options to explain why the batch is being returned; choose the correct ones before returning the batch.

The first thing I would teach is what all of those icons do and go through every drop down menu! It makes indexing a lot of easier when you understand the program: (Auto-Fill, Duplicate previous field, Return a Batch, Delete Blank Entries, Columns vs. Form Entry, Reorganizing Fields, etc.)
My big sign would say 1) Learn the General Indexing Guidelines, 2) Read the Project Instructions for EVERY project, 3) Read every FIELD HELP, and then 4) Read them all again.
Good Luck with your class!

Also, I suggest that you have your trainees read (and understand) the Indexing Glossary so that everyone understands and uses the same standard indexing terminology (Entry, Record, Field, Indexing, Reviewing, etc.). Here is a link to it from the Indexing Help Center:

that is what I thought - i still have it & I guess I can redo it this weekend!! I will delete & correct names as page & all is correct!! I pulled 2 more batches to do & the SAME thing was at hand!!! I guess I will just pray that whoever is indexing these will READ the instructions & NOT make any more mashups!!
Thanks a lot!!!!

Thanks to all who responded to my query - I learned alot that I can use going forward!!!
Who knew the 'reindexing tab" was there!!! Learn something new everyday!!!! I just corrected both batches on my own & found other mistakes in both batches!!!! I have to give an indexing class next month & I am going to make a BIG SIGN - '"'READ INSTRUCTIONS FIRST""
I LOVE indexing & try to do at least 500+ a day!!!! The Lord has taken most of my mobility away BUT my fingers & eyes still work!!!!!

As always, @Melissa S Himes gives great advice. To possibly help with conveying/reinforcing some of it, here are a couple of potential handouts that I’ve created..
