Attaching Records
When you are attaching a new record to a person. If the information in the person record field is empty, you have the option to replace it with the new information.
If the is any information in the field, the replace option is not available.
I would suggest the replace option is made available at all times with an option to edit the information.
Sometimes only the date is there and the new record has both the date and location.

I am undecided about this. @David Slatter can you make a more persuasive argument?

This has been discussed previously. Extensively. Of course, I can't figure out the magic words for turning up the previous discussion.
I also can't remember the logical reasoning against this capability. I only remember that such reasoning exists.

When attaching a source document or even when merging two people, sometimes the information on the LEFT is only partially better than that on the RIGHT (or surviving person in a merge case). For example, the left has birth date of 1831 and place Woodbridge, New Haven, Connecticut and the right has birth of 20 March 1831 and Connecticut as the place. It would be nice to be able to edit the place on the right without overwriting the date on a merge and attaching the record you don't have that choice.

I have sometimes wanted to edit the profile in the Source Linker, but on reflection I prefer not being able to do it there. Editing from the Details page now provides far more information: all the attached sources with that piece of information tagged, their data, and the most recent reason statement.

I remember conversations about this idea. By not allowing instant editing in the source linker and forcing you to go back and edit the profile it slows bad changes. Too many people get click happy when adding sources or information like in a merge, (just look at those couples with 8+ marriage dates with varying levels of information and standardization because someone added the marriage info with another source) The second step of going back into the profile to edit helps make sure the information is reviewed and hopefully the best information is kept. When you go to edit a vital you will see all the sources tagged with that vital information and can compare if needed.

This option has been brought up and discussed ever since the Source Linker was released. At this point, I think the Source Linker is probably the oldest coding of Family Tree which would mean it is probably close to being next in line for a total rewrite. Who knows what we will get then!
From the very first time this request was brought forward sometime around 2014, the explanations from FamilySearch personnel on the old getsatisfaction boards has been the same: Source Linker was written the way it was because we cannot see what we are doing. This is particularly true if working off a hint icon from a task list or a pedigree view as many people do and entering the Source Linker without ever looking at a person's detail page.
It's easiest to explain with an example.
If the left side (the source record) of the Source Linker displays George's birth information as 15 July 1921, Wilmington, Delaware, and the right side (the Family Tree record) has just 1919, clearly the source has better information and the tendency would be to replace the existing information as is being requested here.
The problem is, in the Source Linker you have no access to the Reason Statement under the birth information in Family Tree which states, "Many source records for George give a fictitious birth date of 15 July 1921 in Delaware. Please see the full documentation found in his Memories PDF titled 'Incorrect Birth Information for George.' The key point is that he is listed in the 1920 census with his widowed father in Atlanta. His actual birth record has not yet been found."
We have to keep in mind that completeness of information does not necessarily imply correctness.
There were past comments from FamilySearch personnel that before allowing direct editing in Source Linker they were going to have to come up with some way to display right there in the Source Linker all the reason statements and sources connected to the Family Tree information listed there so that the well reasoned best available information in Family Tree is not replaced with more complete appearing wrong information in a source.

I will happily wait for the rewrite!
