How do you input unattached families to FS?

I have 10,000 names from a small village cemetery in Italy on a spread sheet. I have them grouped into families with parents and children...but no grandparents...just single families. Can I input these families as unattached families?

You would of course what to verify that each of the 10,000 names were not already in FSFT. If they are, create a source in your source box and attach to their individual PID.

You can enter an unattached person by clicking the Recents tab and going to the bottom to "+Add Unconnected Person".

I would suggest that you NOT try to enter into FT all 10,000 individuals by some computerized automated method.

You may want to explore some method whereby you could publish your Cemetery Index online so that others could have access to the Data you have collected so that they can help determine whether an individual should be added or to whom the source should be attached in FT.

the "not a lot of likes" is probably that we all realize that an AUTIOMATED BATCH process is very error prone and will merely create duplicates.

After ensuring that the people are not already in FS Family Tree

they can be entered one by one -- manually via the "Add Unconnected Person"

and thats the simple answer

any discussion about automatic BATCH processing -- was not even alluded to by the submitter and I think we most all agree -- not worth pursuing for its negative impact.

it has to be entered one person at a time.

PLEASE definitely avoid GEDCOM.

An option is to convert your spreadsheet data into a GEDCOM file using a mail merge (not the easiest of processes but possible). You can then upload the GEDCOM file to the Pedigree Resource File under Genealogies. This is then searchable by others.

Having done that, it is possible to add names from the uploaded file into Family Tree using the Compare facility. However, I do not recommend that. Not only is it extremely time consuming but the system is extremely poor at identifying records that already exist meaning that, unless you take a lot of care and effort, you will create duplicate records.

The FamilySearch Places gazetteer currently has two entries for Ruoti: 1861-1882 and 1882 to today. See them here:

If your records are earlier than 1861, a preliminary step would be to request addition of the earlier time frame to the gazetteer.

Then, plan your tree building. For that, you need some information about the current status of related information in FamilySearch. You will be doing a variation of what surname studies do: building older pieces of the tree and connecting them to younger pieces. As shown in this 1-minute video:

• A quick search of Family Tree (Find tool) for Any event, exact place "Ruoti, Italy" finds 1131 profiles of Ruoti residents. Breaking them out by century of birth: 54 in 1600, 307 in 1700, 688 in 1800, 45 in 1900.
• A quick search of FS historical records (Search tool) finds nothing for Ruoti.

Which means:

• You will find few Ruoti person profiles already in Family Tree, so the chance of creating duplicates is small and you may find it efficient to work with software to upload GEDCOM files into Family Tree. However, you should probably start by working in Family Tree with the Ruoti families already there. You will make the contributors of those families very happy, and you have a golden opportunity to share the tree building work with them. So, you may want to set up a Family Group in Family Search or a Group here on Community. I often collaborate with others and find it most efficient to do all work directly in Family Tree. I often use the Family Tree mobile app for this.
• Your project should use the Source Box tool. Learn how to use it ASAP and plan to create a Source Box record for each nuclear family, so you can link a shared record to each Family Tree profile in that family. This is why you may want to reach out to other Family Tree contributors before starting on creating profiles.
