False information on marriage records
One outcome of a surname study is the breaking through of some hard brick walls that are created when fictitious parents are given on marriage records. Usually it is the bride's parents who are fictitious. The fictions may not be intentional; in many jurisdictions the parents' names are not given, and a non-local groom getting a marriage license solo may be put on the spot and make something up.
How to handle them in Family Tree?
Once I've documented the correct parents, I put the fictitious names as alternate names, with an explanatory note.0
I put the fictitious names as alternate names
Are you thinking more historical records with these fictitious names will turn up in future?
I hesitate to use an alternate name field when there is no evidence the person used the fictitious name themself.0
I try to cover that in my explanatory note. My concern - if I don't include the information somewhere - another participant in the great tree will come along and change the parents or create duplicates of the 3/6 parties because of that one record.0
