Where does “Recents-Find by name or ID” Search?
I assumed find by name (or ID) would search, names of family members in my tree or names of individuals I’ve worked on, recently or the familysearch database…. But after reading other posts it sounds the “Recents-Find by name…” Search only filters through the last 50 names I’ve worked on (which by the way evolves rapidly, as I help multiple people with their trees, also).
It just felt like it wasn’t working for me when I couldn’t find an individual by name that I helped my grand daughter with a month ago. I get it now, that it is only a “Recent” Search (of the last 50 people) and I have to go to the Family Tree-“Find” option that searches the whole Family Tree when they fall off my list.

Hi Lori
Thanks for posting your comment on community.
Yes you are correct with respect to Recents find by name. It only looks through those on your recent people list. However, the recents find by ID will find the record regardless if you have looked at the record recently. And there is a difference between recents find by ID and the Find function. For example, if you go to the find function, select Find By ID, and enter the ID of a person who has been deleted by merge, the surviving person from the merge will be found, no the deleted person. So it is not possible to find a deleted record, which you may want to restore, using the find function. However, if you go to recents and enter the ID of the deleted person, the deleted record will be returned and can be restored if appropriate. Personally I use the recents find ID almost exclusively to find a record by ID. To find by name, I use recents if I have recently looked at the record or the find function.
Hope this helps.

The box at the top of Recents behaves differently for IDs than it does for names.
If you type a string of letters, it filters your current Recents list to those people who have that string of letters in their names. So if you start typing "Thom", it'll find Thomas but not Tomas or Tom. And, as you noted, if you last worked on Thomas over fifty profiles ago, then he will not come up.
For IDs, on the other hand, it makes no difference who you've worked on and when. You can input the ID of a profile you've never seen and it'll take you to it. Basically, if you input a string of characters in the form CCCC-CCC and then hit Enter or click Go, it has the effect of generating the URL for that ID's Details page (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/CCCC-CCC) and taking you to it.
