Separate people/ID's for living person, how do I combine?

My husband is trying to connect things with his mother's family tree, and while they were talking they realized the ID for his mom is different in her tree than it is in my husband's tree. And the same goes for my husband in my tree (his ID in his tree is different than the one I have for him in my tree)

Is this something that will just have to wait until they are deceased and the profiles be merged later on? Is there a more efficient way to do this?

The IDs for living people are always different between different accounts. Profiles for the living can only be seen by the person who entered them. This is a privacy feature.

After a person dies, the various people who had profiles for him can mark him as deceased, and merge the resulting public profiles into one.
