Data base error,1840 Census. Smithfield, Wayne, Indiana, shown when Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island is meant.

On page https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHYB-VMB    (Jonathan Buxton)

Citation:  "United States Census, 1840," database with images,

see also attached pdf (sic pdf not allowed, jpg replacements),

Has an incorrect indexed Event Place of "Smithfield, Wayne, Indiana, United States" Instead of the one at the top of the image page

I can EDIT the place for the entry I am interested in (but will not at this time), but at least two other entries on that image page, selected by clicking on the icon to the left of the name in the Image Index, are similarly incorrect, but NOT ALL (e.g. William Brown - actually Mixed, see attached pdf (sic pdf not allowed, jpg replacements),)!  I checked at random one on image 25, and another on image 75 and found the same wrong Event Place error.

I found the error when I could not find the 1840 record for Jonathan Buxton, which I had found at Ancestry.com with a search with name and place, "Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island" ,  and the John Buxton in Cumberland, Providence, Rhode Island, United States did not match what I had found at Ancestry.com.

@FLQR, as @Áine Ní Donnghaile has indicated, it appears that you have found another of the many auto-standardization errors in FamilySearch. In this case, over 1,500 records are affected. I will put this issue into the queue for the engineers to fix. Unfortunately, I can't suggest when the problem will be fixed.

We apologize that this problem continues to haunt us. I notice that, at least, in this case I was able to search the 1840 United States Census collection simply by name and came up with two results: one being your Jonathon Buxton.

Yes the problem is that a Large database has a Place name standardization issue.

In the 1840 Census, "Smithfield, Wayne, Indiana," is shown when "Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island" should be displayed instead.

Yes, @FLQR Placename standardization is a known problem. You will find many threads on the topic. And the mod I tagged has undertaken to report these issues to the engineers for correction.
