Regarding a "ghost" parent situation

Hello. I wonder if there would be someone willing to take a look at the family of:

William Choate 1811–1875 • LK12-D34 and Malissa Damron 1818–Deceased • LK12-8YT

All of their children show a sealing to parents completed in 1995, either at Logan Utah or Chicago Illinois, but the parents are not listed. Additionally, the sealing to parents ordinances have been completed again, the most recent being today, 30 April 2022 at the Payson Utah Temple for:

Isaac Marion Choat 1853 – before 1890 • L1WW-H6Q

I've tracked all the IGI PID numbers for the couple back to the current profiles, so there don't appear to be any bad merges.

I would appreciate any assistance that can be provided in order to "unhide" the parents not listed and to restore the original sealing to parents dates for the children:

John Damron Choate 1837–1893 • KNQX-VJ4

Nancy Choate 1839–Deceased • LH5J-ZX5

Noah Thompson Choate 1841–1900 • LC8F-QKY

William Riley Choate 1844–Deceased • K8XF-3VY

Abram Nicholas Choate 1848–Deceased • K4DH-V36

Adaline Choat 1851–Deceased • MK38-Y4F

Isaac Marion Choat 1853–1890 • L1WW-H6Q

Thank you so much.

Taking a look at the Change Log for the oldest child, John Damron Choate, I see that there is a merge for him that brought in ID: LZZ8-WMM. In the Change Log for that individual, his original parents show as William Choate and Elizabeth Damron, who is listed as a half-sister to Malissa.

If those original sealings were all to William and Elizabeth and then someone found records to show that it was actually Malissa who was their mother and fixed Family Tree, that would set up the situation you are seeing. Elizabeth was removed as John's mother in 2015 so that would fit as to why the parents on the record in 1995 no longer show.

The specialty team will have to look at the underlying data and see who the children were actually sealed to and you will have to double check all the research on this family and confirm who their mother really was.

Thank you so much, Gordon! I didn't take the time to look at the change logs for each of the children. I'll check out that ID.

Gordon, you are spot on. Latest Changes for each of the children show they were originally listed with parents William Choate and Elizabeth Damron. Elizabeth was either there from the the "beginning" or came over in a merged record.

As far as I know there has never been any confusion between Elizabeth Damron b. 1785 issue of Capt. John Damron Sr. and Anna Ladd and Malissa Damron b. 1818, issue of Capt. John Damron's second marriage to Cynthia (last name possibly Thompson). Their birth dates certainly separate them. Not much is known about Elizabeth Damron other than a marriage in 1817 to Taylor Nelson. So, there is really no explanation for the error putting her as the spouse of William Choate -- obviously the error occurred some time before 1995 ordinances.

Thanks, again, for taking the time to check this out. Much appreciated.
