How to index the & sign with number after surname of a grantee on an Index to Land Records

in Indexing
I know this may be a simple solution, but I want to make sure I do it correctly. For example I see Robert McPherson & 1 or Frederick A. Morton & 0. How do I index this? Do I simply do index:
Given Name: Robert
Surname: McPherson and 1 (or 0)

You ignore those descriptors. From the “What To Remember About This Project” section of the Instructions:
- When typing the name of the grantor or grantee, do not include descriptive words or terms, such as "by Atty," "et al," or "and spouse," that may have been written with the name.
