Next to Horace K. Mann is 6402290. Would that be his Service Number or should I leave that field blank. I've looked at all reference images and there is not a "Service Number" heading on any of them (going by the sample given).

That is the service number. The field help example is fairly representative.

No, the field help is not necessarily helpful.
It might be if it didn't consistently give an error when trying to pull up the example. Something must be wrong with the link. I've talked to someone else who had the question and the person above wouldn't have asked if the info was clear! And I would not be here looking for an answer if it was clear.

For reference, above is the critical part of the Service Number Field Help Example - it slows a case where the Service Number column is labeled (with another name for it - Serial Number) Those numbers next to the soldiers’ names in the given batch and any batch are indeed their Serial Numbers / Service Numbers. Where there is an “R-“ include that too. I agree with @Melissa S Himes

BTW - they are usually/often NOT labeled.
