Abbreviated names – two conflicting instructions

1, 2. How do I review names that have been abbreviated or that include punctuation?

Article Id: 17475

Correct an abbreviation if the complete entry is clearly visible. Do not spell out an abbreviation that is not spelled out on the record.2, The last tip under (i) on the mobile app states:

“Abbreviated names – Type the full name even if it is abbreviated. Some names like Maria or William are sometimes abbreviated Ma. or Wm.”

Question Do I write what I see – the abbreviated version – or do I write out the abbreviated name, e.g., Robert for Robt., etc.?

@Craig W. Paxman, please write what you see at this point. Different abbreviations can sometimes be different names. Thank you for all of your efforts!

@ AndLinda I would suggest updating the help under the 'i" on the phone app to indicate not to expand the abbreviations for the 1950 census. It's confusing to have different instructions in different places.
