How come it never goes to the state I choose? i.e. when I choose Virginia, it always gives me Indiana.
@airland, are you still experiencing the same issue? If so, please report it by clicking on "Feedback" on the homepage of the 1950 census. Thank you.
Since New York opened for name review I have tried several times a day to choose it and not once have I been given a New York page to work on, always either California or Virginia. It is very frustrating.
@Carol Poulos, I see that when you go into Name Review it has a header that states:
"You may get results from a different state. This is an issue with birth places on the image. We are working on a fix right now."
So sorry for the frustration! We appreciate your feedback so that the engineers can work these kinks out.
North Carolina NEVER goes to NC
I have just done over a thousand 1950 census name corrections or verifications. I wanted Pennsylvania, but rarely get it. Usually Virginia or New York, but has been other states. This is not the way to make volunteers happy. I can't imagine why Guam and territories were more important than the states. Was always happy to volunteer by helping out with whatever needed done. I have spent hours here correcting place names on birth data. Not happy at all now. We are now 18 days into this census and this is a problem.
I will try again in a few days, if it's not resolved enough to give me Pennsylvania, I'll stop volunteering.
This morning, happy to see eight new states open up. This evening, unhappy that I couldn't get into any of the eight. No matter what state I choose, I get dragged back to Texas or Virginia. This seems like much more than a problem with birth states. Maybe whoever's running this show should consider shutting it down until the problems are really solved.
I understand and agree all states will need to be done, and I'm willing to work on any and all. But, the ongoing failure to solve the pick-a-state problem or to clearly communicate what's going on seems to be making many of us wonder why we're bothering to review names.
@DocMinor, yes, so very sorry for the frustration!! Engineers don't often know the bugs until they receive feedback from those working the program. Thank you for your patience while they are working on fixing it.
From engineers: "You may get results from a different state. This is an issue with birth places on the image. We are working on a fix right now."
Please go ahead and continue working the states that show up for you. Thank you for being so willing to help with this project and working with "computerized" indexing.
Thank you for your response, AndLinda, but it doesn't quite hit the mark. This morning you all have opened up another three states, but still, no matter what I try to choose, I only get Texas or Virginia. If the birth place problem isn't fixed, why keep opening new states when it's bound to frustrate and annoy a lot of reviewers -- like me? Frankly, it looks like the project's out of control; what else isn't working right? I've spent many hours reviewing over 17,000 names, but now I have to question whether my work got ground up in computer glitches, i.e., was a complete waste of time.
Maybe it's time to take a break until you all get this fixed.
