1950 census
What time of day on April 1 will the 1950 census be available? One minute after midnight eastern daylight time or some other, like Greenwich Mean Time?

It will be released in stages. Did you see the new Community link to the census as you come into Community? You will be able to ask questions about the census there.

They are working furiously in the background to get the images loaded into our system. They are loading by state so they can release the census as they complete each state. If you signed up to help, you will get notifications when something is ready. We're hurrying!! 🙂

I am excited to see how well the AI worked on our index (produced by Ancestry). Regardless, you and I and other volunteers will review every entry. We have developed the capability to track so we know what has been reviewed and what is yet to review. We will then serve up to volunteers parts of the census that have not yet been reviewed. Thus, in organized fashion we will review the entire census.

Ancestry.com has a countdown clock for the 1950 US census that ends at midnight eastern time. It shouldn't take as long as the 1940 census back in 2012 (If I recall correctly, it took over a week for all the images to become available, and about 3 months to finish the indexing), but it won't happen instantaneously.

One thing I do know for sure and that is that the images will be up fast. The reviewing of the AI indexed images will take a little longer but people are so excited I do not expect them to take long at all. It will be a race to see if people can beat AI in speed.

My question exactly. I went to the National Archives website and did some transcription of names, including my family, which was cool. Did a bunch of other names of people I knew but cannot find anything on Ancestry or FamilySearch.

NARA got a head start. :) FamilySearch and Ancestry have been working together nonstop since 12am EDT to get the project up and running. It will just take a little time! There is a project details page with more info here: https://www.familysearch.org/en/info/1950-census-details

It certainly is a major undertaking. I worked for several hours today transcribing some of the records indexed by AI on the NARA website. Based on what I saw, the AI hasn't reached a very reliable level yet. Handwriting is so varied and in many cases unreadable even if you stand on your head. The AI used by NARA hasn't reached that level yet and even in records that seemed to be plain to me, there were often transcription errors.
It will take some time to work through, even with the aid of the AI application.
