How can I go back more than 5 previous pages to get a date

Yes, but you shouldn’t do it. Just mark the Military Date fields Ctrl+B (<Blank>). If you can’t find one on the image or the available reference images (+/- 5). The Researchers can do that exploring beyond those boundaries. An Indexer is restricted to the limits of the batch image and its reference images.

We are advised to use:
- Enlistment date
- Muster roll or monthly roster date
- Any other applicable military date
So if there is a date available yes it should be entered.

Yes, as Larry says and I indicated, if there is a military date of some sort for a soldier but not an enlistment date or muster roll or roster date, then you are in the 3rd category -"Any other applicable military date." And a discharge date is a valid military date. So you would use it. If NO military date is available, then you use the Ctrl+B to <Blank> the Military Date fields. But don't worry about the images outside your batch and reference images.
