Indexing document that contains both the maiden and married name of a woman

Hi all, I am indexing voter registration documents where the maiden and married name is quoted. In these cases I have been adding 2 entries with identical info except the different surname - my logic being that enables accurate searching on both maiden and married names in future. Is this the correct way to index it? This involves duplication of effort, which is why I am asking.

Or do I just list her with both 2 surnames on the 1 line? Which name first?

If I just need to add the 2 names on 1 line that is quicker especially when considering that there is also the husbands info to index on same document. However if first method the longer way is right then will keep doing that.

Thanks in advance for your help, and hope you have an awesome day!

    Hi Mark

The more efficient option is the correct one. You make one entry with the maiden name preceding the married name in the Surname field. From the Indexing Help Center here is the relevant KA (Knowledge Article):

Enter the surname as you see it printed on the historical document that you are indexing.

    • Do not assume the surname of an individual based on the surname of someone else, such as a parent or a spouse, unless directed otherwise in the project instructions.
    • Type the maiden name before the current surname. Often the term "née,” “geb,” or “geboren” was written with a surname to indicate a maiden name.
