Sharing ordinances with friends?

The First Presidency letter suggested we should just do ordinances for relatives. They have taken ward and stake files out of the temples which I supposed was for the same reason. However, the share function in the temple reservation list says "Share Family Names with Family or Friends." Is this an encouragement for non relatives to help us with our work? Maybe I am missing something.

Many members have full trees and 4-5 generations of membership in the Church. Oftentimes it is hard for them to quickly find a relative who needs temple work without spending a lot of time doing extensive research. Other members have thousands of family members who need ordinances and can't do it all themselves. We can share with each other so that all the temple ordinances can be completed by those who are attending the temples. Those who share ordinances to the shared temple file allow others who are related to the same persons the opportunity to perform ordinances for family members and it this process also nourishes the temples with names that everyone can help with.

That is all very true, but the question is why in the share function they are suggesting we have FRIENDS do our family names when those people should be doing their relatives instead of ours, according to the guidelines of the First Presidency

Because our friends may not have any easily accessible family ordinances to do themselves. They can help us get our work done while they work on researching their family for other opportunities.

    Nathan

    I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...

[ And, I happen to be a Member of the Church ... ]

    Just in passing ...

I understand the reason for your previous 'Comment' ...

    But ...

    That Said ...

What you have to, note; and, remember, is ...

That the User/Patron, DOING the "Sharing", would MOST likely be a, "Family" member; or, related ...

    Thus ...

That User/Patron, is SIMPLY enlisting the HELP / ASSISTANCE of, Family; or, Friends; or, Ward/Branch members; or, WHOEVER they can, to help get the Work done.

    As Such ...

That is NOT against (or, contrary to), the "Guidelines", of the "First Presidency" ...

NOT everyone, CAN actually DO the Work, in their own right ...

And, as such, CAN (and, are at liberty to) "Share", with whomever the wish ...

The "Guidelines", of the "First Presidency", are ONLY "Guidelines" ...

The "Opportunity", to "Share", HAS been made AVAILABLE to us ...

We CAN, avail ourselves, of that opportunity, if we so desire; or, NEED to.

I know, that this certainly may not help/assist; but, I hope, that this may provide you with, some additional, insight; and, perspective.

I've always understood that letter to say we should only reserve for ordinances names of our relatives. It has never been a policy that one can only attend the temple if you bring your own card. Every time you go to the temple without bringing a card of your own you are helping out a friend somewhere in the world. The share function just lets you help out a friend closer to home.
