How can we determine whether or not to abbreviate state or enter FULL name?

Sometimes it depends on the Project Instructions/Field Help. For example they might say:
If you can determine the expanded name of an abbreviated placename - enter the expanded name.
Other times it's mainly just a matter of entering what you see.

The most important step on the Intro is often missed (The Purple Question Mark). In Step 2 of 7, they explain to "Index information from the image as instructed in each field. Click the (purple question mark) for help with this field."
When you click on the purple question mark for Residence State the field help says:
Type the residence state that was recorded.
Do not correct spelling or expand abbreviations. Do not index punctuation, except hyphens and apostrophes when they were written as part of the place-name.
Occasionally, the residence town, county, and state were written out of order. Be careful to index the places of residence in the correct fields.
If the state was not recorded or was written as a variation of the word "unknown," press Tab to skip this field.
On that card, that residence is GA and the Birth Place is North Carolina. Because it is a tutorial, it is only going to accept the correct answers.
The most important things in indexing are to read all the project instructions, look at the examples, and read the field helps. At the bottom of the project instructions are the General Indexing Guidelines. By clicking on each of those links, you also learn alot about indexing.
Hope that helps. Here is a link to an excellent video that new indexers find enlightening. The actual indexing lesson begins at about the 8 minute mark. Indexing Discussion (Jason Pierson Live)
