Editing transcription errors in British Isles place names

Today, this finally irritated me enough to persevere with trying to make contact with someone in FamilySearch who might actually be able to help.

I found a record for an Isle of Man marriage which has both an index transcript and an image. The place name for the groom was transcribed as "Kork Michael" - I tried changing it to "Kirk Michael" ( what was written - it is one of a couple of dozen parishes on Isle of Man) - this was not an option acceptable to the system. I chose one of the options presented, but I know it is wrong, and I can't see how to undo the edit. It seems like the only options available to me were - a) leave it spelled wrongly; or b) accept a completely wrong location.

Any suggestions??

No, the index correction screen's placename-correction interface is nowhere near as flexible as Family Tree's. It is, in fact, so infuriatingly impossible to use that I have entirely given up on it. It is not possible to correct an index to what is actually on the page: if you try to correct the transcription, it forces you to choose a location from the database instead, and does not allow you to alter the standardized form in any way.

    Right ...

The 'Places', in the "Place Names" Database, in 'FamilySearch', is an ONGOING 'Work in Progress' ...

[ That will, most likely, NEVER end ... ]

And, NEEDS a LOT of WORK ...

    As such ...

    For starters ...

For, current; and, future, reference ...

There are options, that are available, for us, to help/assist, IMPROVE, the "Place Names" in 'FamilySearch':

    [ 1 ] Firstly ...

    Submit "Requests" for both,

    (1) the Addition of, NEW "Place Names"; and/or,

    (2) Amendment of/Correct to, EXISTING.

'Places', in the "Place Names" Database, in 'FamilySearch', though the

    [ 2 ] Secondly ...

There is a specific 'Group', in the "Groups" Section of this Forum; where, "Requests" for both, (1) the addition of, NEW "Place Names"; and/or, (2) the amendment of/correct to, EXISTING "Place Names". in the "Place Names" Database in 'FamilySearch', can be submitted.

That 'Group' is monitored by the "Authorities Team", of the "Standards Team", of "Research Places", of the "Place Names" Database, in 'FamilySearch".

Please be aware that you will need to "Join" a 'Group', to post in a 'Group'.

    That specific 'Group' being:

    Any, is acceptable and appropriate.

    The choice is yours.

[ I have used, BOTH the first two options, quite successfully ... ]

    Good Luck.

I hope, that this may help/assist, somewhat.

    Just in passing ...

    Am I missing something ...

And, there are also, other 'Places', that are "Standardized", for the "Isle of Man", in 'FamilySearch' ...

    eg.

    There are MORE ...

I rarely have the opportunity to make edits to indexed material (as most of the FamilySearch records of interest to me do not have attached images), so wonder if the options shown above are available throughout the website? In other words, is the placename database content fully accessible when using Family Tree and when editing indexed records?

Hi Brett, thanks for trying to assist. In the context of the edit, those were the options I was forced to choose from. "Kirk Michael" is ambiguous.

The village of Kirk Michael contains the parish church of St Michael. The parish, which is considerably larger than the village, was also known as Kirk Michael (meaning Church of Michael). To make it more confusing the parish (and a couple of other parishes) are in the sheading (roughly an electorate) of Michael.

The only option available is the village.

I was trying to choose the parish, which was clear to me was what was intended (the guy was an agricultural labourer, working on a farm and it was a church record).

The other option, Kirk Michael in Arbory, as far as I can tell, doesn't even exist. (Arbory is another of the parishes, but is at the other end of the island).
