Seeking information on marriage sources

Is a marriage license or church document required for a marriage sealing? Can marriages be sealed by calculations from a census document or dates on a census document? Can marriage dates be estimated from the birth of the first child qualify the couple for the marriage sealing ordinance? Specifically, I'm referring to those married prior to government records being instituted. Seeking a reference document pertaining to source requirements for marriage sealing. Thanks!
