Why do Birth records have "American"

While researching european ancestors in India they state "American".

These ancestors are certainly NOT American, so why is it so stated?

Just in passing ...

Can you please, give "Examples", of where, you have 'seen' such.

eg.

▬ In the "Family Tree" Part, of 'FamilySearch', for individuals/persons; or,

▬ In the "Records", in the "Record" (Search) Part, of 'FamilySearch'; or,

▬ In the "Genealogies" Part, of 'FamilySearch', under the individual "Pedigrees"; or,

▬ Elsewhere, in 'FamilySearch'

Please advise.

That way, we would have a better understand; and, most probably, be able to provide, a better response.

I am an "Aussie', hence, the quick response, same 'Time' Zone.

Well, an 'Hour' ahead ...

I am from just down below ...

Both, my Wife; and, I, have Ancestors, who were, Born; Married; or, Died, in "British" India.

WHICH particular one is the problem/issue?

I just had a 'look' through those first few, on the FIRST "Page" ...

They ALL 'looked' OK, to me, for ("British") India ...

IF, it is the latter ones, on the OTHER "Pages", that are, from ANYWHERE; but, "India; THEN, I would NOT concern myself.

The ones on the First "Page" (and, maybe, the Second "Page"), are MORE often than not, the more important ones, that count, the most.

The "Revised"/"Updated", facility, of "Search", is far from perfect ...

[ One, often gets, MANY 'superfluous' results, on the later "Pages" ... ]

I hope, that this helps/assist, somewhat.

Penelope, where in those search results do you see "American"? I looked at the first half-dozen and didn't find that word anywhere.
