When indexing goes wrong

The Swedish household records are pretty often wrongly indexed in a certain way. Most often more than one family is noted in the original records at the same page and often without a specific gap. The indexing person gather children from two couples to one of the couples, the couple at the top of the page.

Then, someone that is not familiar with the original Swedish records and do not check, just add the persons from the indexed record hint. When that is done you can see, as I did yesterday, for ex. 18 children, some of them born with 4 month apart and so on.

I am now days after several years and a lot of struggle capable to take care of this and it takes several hours to sort each family out. This because I search for and add all sources that can be found in birth, death and marriage records as well as household records. I also have the Sveriges dödbok 7 so I can search for deaths until 2017. To add death dates gives a very important perspective. In this process many duplicates show up.

I always search in Family Tree for the correct parents to the children that not belong to my family and add them if they are not already in place.

In my opinion it is to easy to just klick in and add names from the record hints without checking the original. To take care of the Swedish hints you need to be familiar with Swedish name culture and geography.

The names are very similair and repetitive.
