The real James Guthrie of Washington Connecticut (1761-1839)
I am questioning if James Guthrie, husband of Mehitable Hickox, is actually the son of James Guthrie and Abigail Betts. This James’ petition for Revolutionary War service as well as Mehitable’s is quite lengthy and detailed as to their residents between 1777 until their deaths in 1839 & 1848. Other documents support them living in the Washington CT area the entirety of their married life (1783-1839). In one of the letters written by John Calhoun, he states James was born in Pound Ridge NY. And joined the army in Danbury, CT.
At no time does James, Mehitable, daughter, Laura (Guthrie) Bishop, or their friends and family mention in their depositions the family living anywhere other than Washington, Sharon, or Bethlehem, Connecticut after 1783.
Furthermore, there are records of James Guthrie Jr., son of James Guthrie and Abigail Betts presumably, living in Sherburne, NY at the same time. At that period of time in is not reasonable to believe he was living in two far flung locations (Sherburne, NY or Ohio).
I believe the authors of “Records of the Guthrie Family, of Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Virginia”, “American Guthrie”, and “The descendants of John Guthrie of Durham, CT” and others are assuming the two are one and the same based on each other’s text and the “History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut” by William Cothren’s meager note on birthdates and have not produced documented verification to support the conclusions of their books. I’m not disputing James Guthrie Jr. as a child left the state with his family in 1770. I am questioning that he is the same James Guthrie who fought in Capt. Theodore Woodbridge’s Company in Col. Herman Swift's 7th Connecticut Regiment, and was married to Mehitable Hickox, and died in Bethlehem, Connecticut September 7, 1839.
If documentation exists for both James Guthrie’s between 1861 – 1877, I would greatly appreciate seeing it, but as he was a child, I doubt anything can be found. For the dates after May of 1781, I have scoured newspapers, wills, and town records in Litchfield County Connecticut, Westchester County NY, Sherburne NY, and finding the exact location in Ohio he was reported to relocated to.
The greatest find would be the family bible lost during the move from Sharon, CT to Washington, CT. referred to by Laura (Guthrie) Bishop.
