New member needs research help
Hello, my name is Mike. I am new to this group and hope someone here can help me in my geneaology research.
My great grandfather was born in Voightshagen Prussia which is now a part of Poland. I have found his birth record but nothing else. I know he was born Feb. 25 1823 to Martin Pagenkopf and Dorthea Gaedtke. My great grandfathers name is Ferdinand Pagenkopf. His id # is L6SQ-4F6
I would love to learn more about him and hopefully trace that part of my family back further generations. I would greatly appreciate any help from this group

*@Michael Jendusa We are so glad you have joined our Polish community - It is a great place to get help and to help others! We have a lot of talented, experienced participants here.
Most of the time, it is best to use "ask a question" - do this by selecting the arrow to the right of "new discussion". Asking a question allows you to accept the answer or let us know you would like more help. (I was able to change this post to a question for you.)
I will mark my response as a rejected answer because it only gives you some tips, not an answer to your question - then this will continue showing as an unanswered question and it should get more attention that way.
Be sure to review the links at the top of our community page for some great resources. We look forward to hearing from you. We are so glad you are part of this great community!
Thanks for being patient as we sometimes must wait for a response to come from a volunteer with the needed skill set. It is always good if you include the identification number of the person in question in Family Search Family Tree so we can see the bigger picture.
We look forward to your comments and questions.
Enjoy today! Cindy Jarvis

If I were you I would post this to German Research Group both in English and German ( change language) because members, especially German members may know more, ( unless you have already done it).
I have done some research but before I will share it with you let us see what was the spelling and locations of places
Quote: " My great grandfather was born in Voightshagen Prussia" - is it correct ?
Considering what was entered into FS, it seems it might have been Voigtshagen ?

You're correct Voigtshagen is correct

Ferdinand's profile further reads that he was christened on the 27-th Feb 1823 in Zedlin, Stolp.
Is there a smoking gun for the place where he was christened ? I am asking because Voigtshagen is located about 75 miles away from Stolp. Ferdinand could have been christened much closer to his birthplace because there were many protestant churches around.

I'm not sure. The record I found has him Baptised 02/27/1823 in Zedlin (Gumtow, Groß Zapplin, Voigtshagen). First time I'm seeing Stolp associated with him.

Zedlin (Gumtow, Groß Zapplin, Voigtshagen) is the correct name . You may then consider changing the name for the correct one at his profile to : Zedlin, Greifenberg, Pomerania, Prussia
And change his birthplace to : Voigtshagen, Greifenberg, Prussia ( birth 25 Feb)

Recommendations you may want to consider:
- No matter what has already been entered in the tree of Martin Pagenkopf & Dorothea Gaedtke ( 3 other children) consider researching records from Zedlin that are available on-line at FS. Doing research by yourself will make sure it is detailed and complete and you are learning on the way. The gap between birth of Wilhelm - August-Hermann seems to be quite wide. Consider going up and down the records from 1823. Do not forget about Gaedke family. Names are easy to read. I have done a short research and it brought :
Note that Wilhelm and Hermann profiles read incorrect place of baptism at the Martin's tree. They read Zedlin, Stolp instead of Zedlin, Greifenberg. You may want to consider contacting contributors by mail as it looks like all of you are reserching the same family.
Click magnifying glass next to the film number to open indices - first take a closer look at all that read Zedlin, Stolp - this refers to Zedlin, Greifenberg, now I understand why it read it this way at Ferdinand's profile. Then you can narrrow your search adding names of parents. Let me spend a last minute on indices of Martin & Dorothea Family - ( correct birth of Ferdinand to 25-Feb ) :
Note that all 3 indices read professions as "Principal". You may probably comment on Ferdinand. As for thier father. Wilhelm's baptism record his father's occupation : "Budner / Büdner in contemporary German. It means: cottager, small farmer / Kleinbauer. It looks like as "Lehrer" - principal, teacher but it is not what was noted at the record..
It seems you have a lot of enjoyable work to do but it would end up in extending Pagenkopf/Gaedke families in a significant and correct way. You may find siblings , possibly parents etc. provided detailed research is done. It is possible Martin entered marriage vows more than once. There's one more thing I will write about later.

I have a few questions if you don't mind.
How do I find records from Zedlin in FS?
Can you give me more details on the Stolp/Greifenberg connection? Was this just an error made by the person recording the data?
What makes you think Martin may have been married more than once?
Thank you so much for this information and taking time to research this for me.

This is where you need to look to research Zedlin's records. Places mentioned also answer your your second question in part. Question about why Zedlin, Stolp appeared should be asked to indexer/s who indexed those records but if you asked me I would say it's an error resulting from the fact that there there's Zedlin near Stolp but not Voigtshagen nor Gumtow and nor both Zapplins and that FS lists a place named Zedlin,Stolp, Pomerania, Prussia, Germany - see a scan my earlier comment.

Think of Voightshagen for a minute. It was a village populated by 400 people in 1827. They were farming for a living and possibly fishing considering it's location near the Baltic Sea . And yet this relatively small community had surprisingly many men named Martin Pagenkopf liviving there more less at the same period of time. I assumed he might have got married more than once when I read the following :

Take a look at these names and keep them in mind as they are related to those from Voigtshagen. Gützlaffshagen / Gosław is located to the east from Treptow an der Rega / Trzebiatów opposite to Voigtshagen located few miles to the west. Open the records to see what is there.

Do you have a subscription to Fold3? Someone from another site found a record there for Hermans civil war pension. It says Dorothea Eliza PAGENKOPF, 64, of Ixonia, Jefferson Co WI; states she is the mother of Herman, and widow of Martin PAGENKOPF who she married 12-11-1821 Fogenhagen, Prussia by Rev JORDANA I can't find a Fogenhagen. I don't have a subscription so I can't view the record.

I do not. Could you please check the name of the place of marriage one more time to make sure it was Fogenhagen

Definitely says Fogenshagen. Dec. 11 1821

Quote : " I can't find a Fogenhagen".
Neither do I. No Fogenhagen nor Fogenshagen or Vogenhagen / Vogenshagen. Just in case consider going over marriages in Voightshagen one more time.
