I am indexing United States—Enlisted and Officer Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916–1939 [Part L]

I am on a page where they list the men three times when they advance position. Example: John Doe - Captain - Aug 29 1914, 1st Lieut - Aug 29 1914, 2nd Lieut May 17 1915. Do I only enter John Doe once? Thank you for your help. :) Sheri

Hi @CastoSheriLynn1 . Your page is the second page of a (relatively rare) two-page Muster Roll where the records extend from the first page to the second page (your page) and would be indexed by the indexer of the first page using reference images. Please mark your batch image No, No Extractable Data. I'll go into more detail a bit later. See the General Imaging Guidelines on Records that span two Images. I'll be back.

Here is an excerpt (slightly rephrased) from the above discussion where I detail how to index this type of roster.

EXCEPTION: Occasionally (very rarely), you will encounter a batch where your page is the left or right-hand side of a very wide ledger, and a soldier's information does span two images/pages, but your batch will have only one of those pages. If your batch image is the second of those pages, it is marked NED (No Extractable Data). If it is the first page, then the second page is on reference image +1 as @MinnWisRoots indicated in her comment, and you would bring up reference image +1 and index the information for each record from both pages at the same time. You won't have the opportunity to mark the second page (ref image +1) NED because it is not in your batch. As I mentioned above, the indexer of that +1 batch containing that second page will do that.

Please post the Batch Code for your batch so that we can look at what you’re seeing. It is the combination of letters and numbers within brackets at the end of your batch name - it looks like [XXXX-XXX]. In general, for this project, per FS Support, we do index duplicate names, e.g. if a soldier is named in the roster, and then later in the losses section on the same page. But I would like to see the context for the situation you’ve described before I’d feel comfortable answering your specific question. But based what you described I’d be inclined to index it just once. That one instance would be sufficient for a researcher to search and find the image and evaluate the meaning of what you see. Please, however, do post the Batch Code for the most accurate response. That might not even be the proper date to use.
