Record Hints

Why do the same record hints appear more than one time for the same person on Family Tree? I keep getting the same record hints over and over. One person in the tree has the very same record listed 5 times as a source document, but that same record is popping up again as a record hint! Should I delete the duplicates from the individual or keep adding the same record over and over? Thanks for any input

Thank you for contacting Community with your question about multiple record hints.

Previous Community members haver responded with some helpful information. Here is what our engineers tell us about this situation.

Do not dismiss the record hint if you have already attached a similar record hint. Attach it instead. Dismissing duplicate record hints may prevent the hinting system from finding record hints in the future about this person. Duplicate hints should be attached.

For further information about record hints that do not appear to be your ancestor, you may go to the Article link below.

Often a record has been indexed multiple times. I attach all the versions to my person of interest. That helps eliminate the risk of duplicates for that person being created because someone else attaches that record to a new person of the same name, dates, and place.

Close examination of the sources generally reveals that they're not actually identical, just based on multiple indexings of the same image, or on multiple register entries for the same event (such as in the parish register and the bishop's copy). If this is the case, it's best to just go ahead and attach them all, because (as Áine said) this reduces the chance of error.

However, sometimes the system gets itself into a tangle, causing an endless loop of repeating hints for the same thing. I've only encountered descriptions of this, here in the forums. As I recall, the only fix people found was to detach the source completely. Once it wasn't attached to any profile anywhere, the endless loop would go away, with just one record hint on one profile.
