This is a record of someone I have met. I also know the family well. The middle name of this person has been incorrectly spelt. Is there anything that can be done about correcting this?

Many thanks,

Hovering under the "Edit" part of the record produces the message: " Edit unavailable. Sorry, this record cannot be edited." The ability to edit records is being widened all the time, so perhaps you will be able to edit this in future. For now, you can only add a comment about the incorrect middle name, if / when you attach it to the person's Family Tree profile. But, no, there is no current way of editing this specific record.

Your question will be forwarded to the Search team for review and assistance. You may be contacted by that team if they need more information. Since this project is already published on FamilySearch it falls under the Search historical records team and not indexing.

Thank you for contacting FamilySearch. Best wishes as you continue finding records for your family.

Sometime ago I did changes in the records by "Edit" but now this functionality is not available. I see a lot of mistakes in surnames in the books I work with, and I would help to fix those mistakes and let other users to get the PROPER information. From my point of view, if a surname contains a mistake, it cannot be found by search.

@VadymTymoshyk, I found a relative whose name had been misindexed from his father's title (Tisztelendő "Reverend" became Fitzdeado), so mistakes in surnames do not necessarily prevent things from being found by search. Yeah, it'd be nice to always be able to correct such errors, but we have to console ourselves that the index can still be useful -- if nothing else, by pointing at the right part of the film to be browsing through.

@Julia Szent-Györgyi, it seems you did not get my point. The button 'Edit' stopped to work. That's it.

The button still works fine, on those collections on which it is available. It is not available on every collection.

I wish I was able to correct miss information and spelling of names etc on my grandmother and great grandmothers records this is a problem for others who are researching the family.

Thank you for your attention to this matter

Yes, I have the impression that the records have often been misread (by human or machine?) and mistranscribed. Some of my ancestors' names are wrong, sometimes to the point of being unrecognisable. I only know this because I already knew the name. For example the Greek name Sotiri has been transcribed as Stoin.
