I've located a deceased family member's info on Familysearch.org, however, the uploaded death certificate is for another person.

Who can I notify that the wrong Death Certificate exists on this site for my family member? How can the correct one be uploaded?

Thanks to anyone who can answer. Be safe and well.

When you say it has been ‘uploaded’ do you mean an image of an original document has been added to the memories tab, or that a source you believe to be incorrect has been attached, or that the wrong information has been imputed in the vitals under ‘Death information’? ...or something else?

There are a number of reasons a discrepancy may occur. It could be that PID you are looking at is a conflation of individuals either due to erroneous merges or research error. It maybe that an erroneous tree or GEDCOM data has been imported with incorrect information (common, but as you’re referring to an actual certificate, less likely in this case). It’s also possible that the individual you have located is a contemporary to your ancestor, with very similar information/relationships but not the same person - this is a common occurrence that can lead to incorrect data attribution and erroneous merges.

Its hard to say what’s going on in your case without a bit more information. Could you elaborate a little on the specifics of the discrepancy? A link to the PID you’re referring to could also be helpful.

    Hello @chearrington1

It sounds like someone has attached a photo of a death certificate to the wrong person in Family Tree. The first step you might want to take is to notify the contributor and advise them of the error. You do this by clicking on the name of the contributor and sending them a message.

You can also fix incorrect tags in memories by following these steps:

    1. Sign in to FamilySearch.
    2. Navigate to the memory item with the incorrect tag.
    3. Click the item.
    4. To the right of the image, find the People box. Click the Down Arrow icon next to the incorrectly tagged person.
    5. You will be presented with two options depending on whether you or another person contributed the memory item and tagged it.
      1. If contributed by you, Delete Tag will appear. Click Delete Tag then click Delete.
      2. If contributed by another person, Detach from Family Tree will appear. Click Detach from Family Tree and then click Detach.
    6. To create a tag for the correct person, click in the image.
    7. Drag the tag box to the correct position. Use the green dot to resize the tag.
    8. In the box under the tag, enter the name of the correct ancestor. Click the name and then click Save.

Note: you may or may not want to follow through with steps 6-8 -- that will depend on if you can identify who the death certificate belongs to and can find them in Family Tree.

Here is a link to the knowledge article from our Help Center that explains how to correct memories tagged to to the wrong person:

I am part of he George H Goodwin family tree....I found confusing records

Marriage Certificate for Clarence "D" Goodwin & Agnes M Mulligan - shows George H Goodwin - Maine (G9WP-8N7) & Nellie Ellis - NH (93RL-SKG) as Clarence's parents... His name was to be "Clarence "G" Goodwin. Researching the above, Nellie Ellis & George H goodwin, I find no documentation placing Clarence G Goodwin with them.

Now, there's another George H Goodwin (G9WN-67G)....Census show, this George Goodwin as being single all his life. Stated in his Will, George adopted Clarence "G" and his entire estate went to him & his wife, Agnes Mary & my great grandfather, George Clarence Goodwin was also mentioned.....This seems like the correct person.

With this, I'm finding, researchers are attaching the correct George H Goodwin (G9WN-67G), ....but I haven't found 1 tree where Nellie Ellis has been found....I believe, she has been attached to both George H Goodwins and needs to be removed from (G9WN-67G....

Would love to hear back from you
