How to correct spelling of names?

My grandfather and children's names are misspelled. I can see that a US Census served as supporting documentation but it incorrectly spelled their last name and the first names of the children. This is now showing as the primary spelling in the extended family tree. As a direct descendant, I would like to correct this critical error. How can this mistake be edited?

    Hello Pamela Luce Christensen

    Go to your grandfather's page and edit his name to correct the spelling. In the Reason, explain what you have said here. If possible, reference other documents, such as birth certificate, marriage document or military papers. You could make an entry in Life Story about the correct spelling of his name, that it is incorrect in that census. Repeat the process with each child.

    Welcome to the Community. Not sure if your question is to correct the misspelling on your records or correct the misspellings on the census. Therefore, hopefully I can answer both for you. The first article is how to correct information within a person's details page. The second article is how to edit and correct indexed records (such as census).

    Thank you very much for this helpful info. Setting the record straight takes time & effort. I'll do my best to contribute to the accuracy of your searches. For instance, Kingsley Loring Rice's search shows him at age 20 on a ship named Nelly. The official source states, Immigration. At age 20, at the time of sailing of the Nelly, he was a college student about to enter his 3rd year at Williams College and was setting sail along with friend,Tom Belshe (also aboard the Nelly, an old immigration ship used for cruises abroad post WWll).

    @AnnRice1

    Even though you did not provide the URL for the "Immigration" record that contains the information about Kingsley Loring Rice, we found a record for Kingsley Loring Rice Jr LY3R-F74 which has the 1951 source about being aboard the ship Nelly. If you look at the image, you will see that he was simply listed as a passenger on that ship. His home address at that time was in Winnetka, IL. His birth location of Evanston, IL is also included on the passenger form.

    While this record is included in our "Immigration" records because it records individuals who came to the US from another country, it does not mean that every person mentioned as being on the ship is an immigrant. These records are very valuable, however, when searching for our ancestors who we know were immigrants.

    It is so important to not only read the index for this type of record, but when an image is linked to the index it is important to carefully review the image since there is often detailed information that was not entered on the index. I hope this information is helpful and that you will use the following URL to actually view the image of the record. Kingsley is listed as the 24-passenger on this page.

    Because this issue is really about working with information in Family Tree, I will be moving the discussion to the Family Tree category in the Community. This will allow others who have a similar concern to find the discussion.

    On this census (1911 England census for Stockton upon Tees, Durham, England; see URL below), the surname (John Edward Tindale, and family) is misspelled as "Lindale", and "edit" is not highlighted, so I cannot correct the spelling. I could not even find him until I found him first on Ancestry, and then fed all the pertinent information into FS.

    How can this be corrected?

    Thx, Ann

    @WilmethAnnCarol2 At this time that particular record is not available for editing the indexed information. It should be available some time in the future, so check periodically.
