Same names, still review??
Im working on the new United States--Enlisted and Officer Muster Rolls and Rosters, 1916-1939 [Part K] and i have a couple of questions.
First, if a date on one of these pages is outside the batch date, (like 1915 or 1940 for example) Is it ok that i still indexed it like that and submitted it? Is the record just misfiled?
Second, there are several times ive had a record that i review and submit, and a little later i seem to get a record that looks exactly the same. Same people. Its easier to notice when the record only has a few names on it. Ive thought about reporting it as a duplicate file, but i havnt been able to remember if the dates were the same as the first one i remember, which if not, would make it a different timeline record entirely. I cant go back and see a file i already submitted to make sure. Am i in the right for just reviewing and submitting these new ones? I know for a fact ive done many short files with the same 5 or so people on it but i dont know if its a waste or not.

Without the batch code we cannot say if we index batches out of the timeline but since you were able to submit it then it likely was acceptable.
Yes please just review and submit batches that appear to be the same. We can speculate as to whether they are the same or not but we would go ahead and index them whatever the situation.
Thank you for asking!

A duplicate image is only a duplicate of another image in your batch. Muster Rolls cannot have duplicate images because there is only one per batch. Since a muster roll is taken every 1 or 2 months, there is definitely going to be duplication of soldier's names.
The first project instruction for Muster Rolls indicates that you should not worry and should index and submit records outside the date range: Records that are outside of the project date range should still be indexed.

As a Navy brat, I can tell you these Muster Rolls are taken every month for the same military men and women throughout their enlistment years - for example my dad served on the USS Enterprise (aircraft carrier) during WWII - if one morning he didn't show up for Muster or Roll Call, you can bet his Chief went looking for him - if he wasn't in sick bay, he might be overboard or MIA -- my point is not to be funny but just to say these records were never duplicated, so families looking for relatives/ancestors will find a paper trail of every place and when a person may have served his/her country
