I have an ancestor, William Stubbs (LVJJ-M52) has two sons both named John. John Stubbs (MPCB-TN7) and John Stubbs (MPCB-TV7). How do I verify that they were both born William Stubbs?

You have baptismal records for both sons, with names of father, mother, and maternal grandfather, and in the same place. That's pretty solid. Considering the genealogical proof standard and the information you have now, you can plan some additional research. For example, Sometimes a younger child would be given the same name as an older, deceased child, so:

    • Find a death or burial record for the John Stubbs born in 1794.
    • Attach to Family Tree profiles all John Stubbs historical records in the parish or larger area.
    • Build out any other Stubbs families in the parish, especially any families with a John.
    • Show that this naming practice was used by other families in the parish.

The first John died as a four-week-old: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-996B-RQ7M?i=133&cat=371269

It was a common practice throughout Europe to "re-use" the names of children who died. One explanation I've seen is that they saw it as a way for the deceased baby to live on.
