Hi. I have a couple of Death Notices that have handwritten numbers on the side of them. The one in particular I want to know about is a death from 1958. Does anyone know what these numerical annotations mean?

I would contact the National Archives of South Africa to see if they can explain why there are numbers on the left side of the document. The Wiki article should provide the URL for the Archives.

    Hi @JeaninePettersen

Can you provide the URL for the two death notices you have found? Without looking at the records it is difficult to try to determine what might be included in the records.

If you are referring to the handwritten 211/982565 number at the top of the notice, the numbers are on the line that is titled Identity Number, so these numbers may be the way this person is identified in the record collection.

To learn more about the South African Death Notices, please search for an appropriate article in the FamilySearch Research Wiki. Click Search, then Research Wiki on the dropdown list. In the search field type South African Death Notices and see what articles are available that may provide an additional understanding of what appears on these records.

You may want to contact the South Africa National Archives directly if you cannot find additional information about what is included on your father's death record. We did find one Wiki article that provides information about how to contact them for assistance with genealogical research.

Thank you very much for all the references. I have read most of these articles before. The numbers I am curious about are the ones written on the left of the Notice. I wondered if these referred to anything specific.

@JeaninePettersen After I read your question, I happened to see an unrelated Death Notice from the Union of South Africa 1928. I will try and put in a link here:-

    https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C919-3SGG-F?i=400&cc=2517051&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQGPP-9PMH

As mentioned, this is for an unrelated person, but I see on the Death Notice in the field 'Has the Deceased left a Will?' Someone has handwritten in pen 'Joint Will with 2nd wife RG Vol56 No 1649 125:235'.

It made me think that your handwritten numbers MIGHT be something to do with the reference number of a Will filed. It is just a guess on my part. The other idea is that an Admin person back in the day was keeping a tally of some sort, or it might refer to the deceased's grave number?

Thank you so much for your interest. It is quite a conundrum. There are so many numbers, they must refer to something. They definitely do not refer to either a Will or a grave number. The death was very sudden, the deceased only 24 years of age, and he is buried in Durban.
