How to find out if a child added to a family is correct or not?
See George Cook GSFB-136 who is my farthest back great grandfather.
Everything I know about him is attached to familysearch. Recently I noticed a child Barnabas Cook MZL7-1PJ attached as a son. I have looked at this Barbaras's sources and all pertain to him or his wife or children. Nothing refers to being a son of George Cook. Now over my many years of combing thru Marion county records I have noticed Barnabas Cook being in the same area Marion County Ga and surrounding places, He is indeed the age to be son of my George Cook, but I would not have attached them together.
I have written to the submitter who attached Barnabas to George. Asked why she thought she should attach him.
Have you ever had a problem like this? What would you do?

Good morning Pat,
I have run across problems like this, as I think most of us have.
You handled it correctly by contacting the submitter and detaching Barnabas from Rebecca.
In the 1820 census there is a George Cook in Laurens Co., South Carolina with a female in the household b. the same time frame as George and a female under 10. With the age of George it is very likely he had a previous marriage, but I could not find documentation for a marriage or name. Like you I could find no documentation for the parent's of Barnabas. An 1830 census in GA or SC might help in solving this. At least you would know if he had a son prior to 1830.
I would leave it as you corrected it. You could add a note that the parents of Barnabas is not documented.
I hope you hear back from the submitter.
Thank you for using the Community.

Per MyHeritage, there is a George Cook born 1789 in Lancaster, South Carolina, after which he was married / lived in / most likely died (in 1883) in Georgia. With his spouse, Rebecca Jane Johnson (1806-1886), George had ten children, including Barnabas B. Cook (1828-1893).

Thanks for the my heritage info. But unfortunately this is a duplication of the very error I described. Barnabas Cook MZL7-1PJ does not belong to George Cook GSFB-136. Entered in familysearch without source or documentation and repeated the error in myheritage. Did you see any source in myheritage which linked Barabas Cook to George Cook except that they lived in the same Marion county?
I agree that it is possible, but I want some proof.
Thanks
