How do I fix someone's name in an index?

I have an Ancestor who served in the military as an Ensign (I 'll call him Richard Harris.) A mistake occurred while creating indexes for him because some of the search results, record summaries and citations refer to him as Richards Ensign Harris. (The clerk entered the name correctly in the original record.) This mistake resulted in everyone assuming Ensign was his middle name - it is propagated all over the web.

I tried to fix it, but I must not have the appropriate permissions, or I am doing something wrong, because I keep getting the message, “Edit unavailable. Sorry, this record cannot be edited." What am I doing wrong? If I am not doing something wrong, who do I contact to get it fixed?

Likely you are doing nothing wrong. The indexed name on the record image probably is just not editable currently. If you want to include the URL to the record just include it here in your post. Generally though if at some point the index becomes editable - you would do the same thing you are doing - only instead you will not get the 'Edit unavailable' message. You can save the image as a source attached to 'Richard Harris' in the Tree - even if Attach to Tree button is not available. You can do this by: 1. inputting the URL for the image that contains your ancestor's record as a source or 2. downloading an image copy to your shoebox (if available) and referencing that as the source.

Other than these suggestions - you have reported the index issue here and I don't know any other special means whereby it can be corrected. FamilySearch may take a while to get to the point of correcting indexes - so it may not happen anytime soon. Thank you for your patience with mistaken indexes!

Another option is to add a comment in either the Note section or collaboration section stating just what you have posted here, so others contributors may benefit from your knowledge
