Guest complaint about change to searching
This guest took the time to write the complaint quoted below. I have emailed her about this and told her that I have sent it to our IT department. If you would like to make a further response, send it to me and I will forward it to her.
"I find this new way of searching very frustrating. It is hard to follow, too wordy with too much "stuff" to sort through. I had the old way down pat and loved it...and always found the record I wanted! Please do not keep this new form. I could not find the record I wanted at all. So I just cut and pasted into the relative's page the source info that I needed to bring up the census source I wanted to find...and couldn't because of your new format."
A second complaint has been received by FamilySearch. This one reads "How can I print or store the info. When I print, I only get page 1 and only the names on the left hand side. what good is this info to me if I can not print it."
Sorry, I printed the wrong quote in the second complaint. The correct quote is "
New search page is poor, harder to navigate, unnecessary change to a search page that worked and was straightforward to navigate New Page keeps failing to bring up results, "Something went wrong"3
Here is a third complaint. "It took away the viewable options that the other page offered and "getting to know" this setup is not comfortable. I liked choosing the collection and seeing the spelling options or sound options . The other pages' familiarity was more easily navigatable".4
Lately, when I search for possible sources and information for my ancestors, I will find a source with valuable information but then after selecting the info to add to my record, there is no "Save" link to add the information. I can view the record but there is no link for saving the record and image to my ancestor.1
I also feel like your new query format is a giant step backwards. Most new versions involve a learning curve, and many people are averse to change, but I feel this change goes WAY beyond a learning curve.
It may have resulted in some improvement or advantage on YOUR server's side of the system, it certainly did not enhance the query experience for us. It does NOT appear to enhance our results, it does not make the query process simpler for the user. User-friendly it is not.... it is frustrating beyond words.
If there was some small portion of the previous format was not working properly, was it necessary to reformat (aka destroy) the entire page ???
You have wonderful, massive database which your members have spent a lifetime collecting, it is a shame that this new format has diminished accessibility to all of their hard work.
I also do not like the new format at all. It is visually confusing, and I cannot find what I need without clicking through multiple menus and entering data over and over again. Can you please return to what was a much simpler and cleaner user interface? This is TERRIBLE.4
PLEASE CHANGE IT BACK!!!!!4
FamilySearch has been a treasure to me. I've even worked to do a bit of indexing when I could. I correct or report every single transcription error I discover so that we can all benefit from the most accurate possible records. And so I am so heartbroken with the new search interface, which appears to have eliminated my ability to search based on partial names, and which lacks the checkbox for "exact spelling only". (Perhaps that's still an option but I couldn't find it.).
It's absolutely heartbreaking to think that people now need to approach their search efforts already knowing fairly precise information about their ancestry. Prior to this, you could follow every crumb and every hunch. You could intuitively search for different spellings of a name, or for all the people from a particular place. I don't know how this new interface could possibly be seen as an improvement in any way, shape or form. Please consider the value this tool brings to so many, and make some changes so that it can serve those who need it! Thank you.3
How many negative comments are required before the matter is deemed to be worth fixing ? Now that I cannot use the search facility, and therefore cannot do any more research, I have resorted to trawling the comments. There is a vast amount of negative reaction to the new implementation. Really huge. If this had been my design I would already have reverted to the previous one and started a new discussion thread for a user's working party to discover what users really want from the system.3
Here is the comprehensive discussion of this, with the official explanation by FS staff.
If you have not already, PLEASE go over there and add your comments on the main thread, so we are all heard.
