Free Online Resources from the Missouri State Archives
The Missouri State Archives offers several indexed and partially indexed databases on their website which may be of interest to genealogists, including a few that previously required submitting formal research request forms. The databases cover three basic categories: 1. Census/Tax Lists, 2. Military Records, & 3. Death Records.
⬛ Census/Tax Lists
The Missouri State Archives has territorial, state, non-population federal and special census records from 1752 to 2004. Most of the census and tax lists are fully indexed and searchable by name, county, and year. Click here to search the census and tax list databases. Under the "Series" drop down menu, select the applicable census or tax list type, enter any additional relevant search criteria (less is more), and click "Search". To view the image associated with a specific search result, click "View Details", then "View Image".
• 1850-1880 Federal Census Mortality Schedules
In addition to name, county, and year, also indexed by age at death, month of death, and cause of death.
• Territorial Censuses & Territorial Tax Lists
Limited counties and years (only items marked as "transcribed" on this list) Note: many of these censuses were conducted in French or Spanish since Missouri was part of Louisiana at this time and governed by France, then Spain, and then France again.
• State Censuses & Tax Lists
Limited counties and years (only items marked as "transcribed" on this list).
• Special Censuses
Limited counties/municipalities and years (only the items marked as "transcribed" on this list).
• 1850-1880 Federal Census Agricultural & Manufacturing/Industrial Schedules
Only indexed by county and census year. Warning: images may take some time to load, since all sheets from a county's agricultural schedule or manufacturing and industrial schedule are loaded collectively.
⬛ Military Records
The Missouri State Archives holds nearly 1½ million pages that document the service of Missourians in domestic and foreign wars between 1812 and World War I. These military records primarily consist of individual service cards, but the extensive collection also includes muster rolls, special orders, reports, and more. Click here to search the soldier database.
⬛ Death Records
• Post-1910 Deaths
Death certificates began being recorded statewide in 1910 and are closed for 50 years before they are transferred to the Missouri State Archives. Click here to search the post-1910 death certificate database.
• Pre-1910 Deaths
The Missouri Birth and Death Records Database is an abstract of the birth, stillbirth, and death records recorded before 1910. The database currently contains limited records from 87 of Missouri's 114 counties and the City of St. Louis. Click here to search the pre-1910 death certificate database.
• Coroner's Inquests
The Coroner’s Inquest Database contains records from selected counties and the City of St. Louis from 1842-1975. In Missouri, the coroner is a county official, usually elected, who investigates and creates records for deaths that occur under accidental, questionable, unusual, or suspicious circumstances. Click here to search the Coroner's Inquest Database.

Oh, and there's also three additional databases that are rather incomplete and only provide a textual abstract of the record, though you can contact the State Archives for an image of the original:
Missouri's Judicial Records - abstracts of select Missouri court records.
Naturalization Records, 1816 - 1955 - currently only includes naturalization records from about 25 of Missouri's 114 counties and the City of St. Louis.
Missouri State Penitentiary: 1836 - 1931 - The Missouri State Penitentiary Database indexes the Register of Inmates Received 1836–1931 and the Register of Military Prisoners, 1864–1875. The register of inmates received includes information about the prisoners, their crimes and sentences, as well as when they entered and were released.
