Hi, All. I downloaded this batch, opened it, and all the data fields were already completed BUT the surnames and given names are backwards and the first entry is the name of the person who completed the report and isn't listed elsewhere on it. I'm sure it wasn't one of my batches, as I know surnames from given names.... But I want to understand the process of "returned batches": do they go "back into the pot" so that anyone might get them and correct them vs being sent back to the original indexer? I'm more than happy to correct this one. (and if I WAS the original... sheesh! what was I thinking!? :) ) Thank you for your response.

Hi Jan. A reviewer has sent that back to you without clearing the data since the date is correct. An easy way to index this would be to rid yourself of the indexed data in the Surname and Given Name fields. If you remove the names in the first entry name fields, and click on that now empty fields, you can click the 6th icon from the right and render all the name fields blank. (The copy text forward tool also copies empty spaces forward).

You can correct t hem but if you simply return them then someone else will face the same situation. If you click on Batch in the top left corner of the screen you can return the batch to be totally re-indexed.

Melissa, thank you for the tip on the clearing all the name fields. If I can help correcting this type of record, I'm very happy to do it.

EVHLHM: I didn't want to return the batch for the reason you said: someone else will faced with it. The names of the men on these rosters are what's important to me. I want to help get them indexed so they can be put out there for their family members to find. :) Thank you for your reply.

@Jan Clapperton Allen, My apologies. I thought you were in the indexing mode. My bad for not looking at the top corner and seeing Review.

Anyway, you wanted to know what happens when a batch is returned. When we use Return Batch, it simply goes back into the pot for another indexer or reviewer to pick up, depending on what mode you are working in. If you use Reindex Batch, then it goes into the pot for the next indexer to complete. As a reviewer you will have the option to keep the indexed data or delete it which obviously gives the next indexer a clean slate to work from. The batch will not go back to the original indexer.

If you do correct these, it will go onto a second review so your work will also be checked. It is fully up to you if you want to correct the batch, or if you would rather return it for a second attempt by an indexer. I would probably wipe the data and let an indexer have a shot at the batch. It is hard for beginners to find projects like this one.
