Variant/Alias guesses in a NEW record index entry for the same record image
I have been taught about using OR for name variants.
I still have a concern with producing the best indexing result to pass on for review and how my best efforts are reviewed and may or may not contribute to the final reviewed index submitted for publication.
My concern could possibly be resolved IF I were allowed to enter multiple records for each record line from the image IF somehow my multiple records could be 'linked'/notated to that line in the image and not linked to the line above or below, etc.
Disadvantage: This would change the process for reviewers - they would need to learn the new process - and carefully review the multiple entries for each record and either leave them as multiple guesses OR delete out extraneous guesses and enter the best guess.
I have been told the reason current variant transcription for fields is not allowed is because the wildcard options are contractually acceptable and not variant guesses. The record custodians agree to only one entry per field - while I understand this is preferable I don't understand why multiple guesses could not be allowed. My concern is that wildcards actually may harm the researcher in locating records. Good guesses might be better than wildcards - but I have no data on this.
Good information to know - since the Index is reviewed twice only if 20% or more is edited by the first reviewer - it seems that might leave a couple to perhaps a dozen fields in error if below the 20% threshold.
