Community responses from foreign language users

I understand a community is all about answering the needs of users with questions. But shouldn't it be done in the language the question was asked?

I don't know that an answer in a foreign language will be viewed as too helpful. If the user responding in a foreign language understands the question in the language it was asked - shouldn't they respond in the language it was asked? why respond in a foreign language?

I know from personal experience that being able to understand a language does not automatically mean that one can write coherently or grammatically in that language. I have given answers in English to questions asked in German on these forums. I prefer not to apply a machine translator to my text, because the recipient is likely to get better results applying one himself, using what I actually wanted to say (the English text) rather than whatever approximation the machine's first pass yields.

That said, I do find the Spanish boilerplate responses to be somewhat annoying. Those knowledge articles all exist in English, so there's really no reason to link to the Spanish versions when a question was asked in English.
