Indexing Process: Effect of Return Batch on My Indexing Totals

Using Return Batch menu option appears to not add records you indexed to your Indexing Total.

This is 'as designed' and the only indexer who receives increment to ones My Indexing Total is the Indexer that uses Submit Batch.

Shouldn't I receive credit for records where I use Return Batch? I vaguely recall that they said this feature would not change when it was rolled out - one of the reasons I have not returned to indexing until now.

@LarryClark43 ^ 🤣 Yes that is the way it is designed to work.

@barbaragailsmith1 Now Barbara - you KNOW that's not what I'm asking don't you?? 🤔 I'm asking for the RECORDS that I did index to be accredited to me NOT the whole BATCH. A record in Web Indexing - for those of you NOT in the know - is the minimum number of fields to complete one line of information in the batch. My question is why wouldn't I get credit for the work I did do before I returned the batch. It's like showing up to your workplace and working a few hours - do you claim the full day or just the hours you were at work? I'm asking why the system can't count how many records I returned - should that not be easy to count? Duplicate or Non-Extractable Data are situations where you did not Index anything - that is TOTALLY different than indexing something and Returning the Batch. We can agree to disagree then - I think Records I index should count toward My Indexing total - it's 'the difference one can make'.

Theorectically if 20 - 30 people did 1 line of a particular batch and used Return Batch and did not Submit Batch - none but the person who last Indexed that batch and then Submitted it would get credit in their indexing total. That just doesn't seem right to me - does it to you? I assume it is that way because it's 'easier' for the system to track Submit Batch than Return Batch - meaning the 'Quality Check' has been completed and the batch submitted to the Review queue. Another issue might be that the system doesn't know exactly how many records are in a batch - it defaults to whatever the Project default is and then the indexer needs to set that amount appropriately for the image they are transcribing. In any case, my point is that for those of you who don't know - you won't receive any increment to your 'My Indexing Totals' unless you complete the ENTIRE batch and use Submit Batch rather than Return Batch for someone else to continue Indexing.

It's interesting that it is that way and I think I understand why it is that way - but I don't have to like that it's that way - and I can point out that I don't think theoretically that it SHOULD be that way. But it is that way until it changes - which likely won't be soon or ever. So use Return Batch as you see fit - but if you want to see your 'My Indexing Total' number increase - DO NOT USE 'RETURN BATCH'!

If I am not mistaken, the blessings from your work goes to the person that finishes the indexing.

Why would we get credit for records we didn't index and submit? The records aren't counted by the system unless they're in the system as being done and they aren't done until they're submitted.

Ah. I see what you mean. You index part of the batch but then return it for someone else to finish. But they still don't get counted until submitted and the system will only see the submitter as the one who indexed it. I see no problem with that. At least you can have the satisfaction of knowing you did a few more records than what's showing in your totals. Totals are fun to know, but I think the reason we all do this work is to make it easier for people to do their genealogy. Do you know that when you mark an image as Duplicate or Non Extractable Data it's not counted either because no records were indexed?
