Sadie Reiter does not exist

My name is Candace Vallimont

My grandmother was Alta Maria Rider Vallimont - Born December 29, 1895, Died August 13, 1976. Daughter of Martin L and Margaret Rider

Alta Vallimont was very detailed and recorded many details of her family history for future generations. She was one of 11 children

The family tree shows a Sadie M. Reiter born in 1880. It also shows a Lulu Mae Rider born in 1880 (my great aunt - she was born Oct 12, 1880).

Unless they were twins, two children could not have been born in 1880, particularly since Lulu was born in October. And there were no twins in my

grandmother's family tree.

The source for this name is a census report that shows Sadie M. born in October of 1880. On close inspection I think the fancy writing really says Lulu, not Sadie.

The were 11 total children in the family, not 12. It appears Sadie M. Reiter was created by hard to read handwriting. And Sadie M. is really Lulu Mae.

Thanks for your assistance.

When there is more than one record for the same ancestor, as in your case of the Census providing an alternate name for one of your ancestors, the appropriate solutions is to merge the two records, (combining them into one) keeping the correct information, and in the merge the invalid or duplicated information will be archived.

How do I decide if two records in Family Tree are about the same person?

    Hi @CVallimont

Your reasoning is sound. You can merge the profiles of "Sadie" and Lulu Mae into a single person. I would also add a reason statement to the surviving profile of Lulu Mae.

The FamilySearch tree is collaborative. Many of us work together to make one tree, with a single profile for each person.

I also see that there are 2 profiles for Martin Rider and Margaret. Those should be merged as well.

    The instructions for merging: https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-merge-possible-duplicates-in-family-tree
