Does anyone know about Groff, Russia? It is in my family tree, but it is not standardized, and I can

Even Wikipedia's "disambiguation" pages for Groff, Grof, Graff, and Graf are coming up short.

Do you think it might be a name shortening of a place in Russia? Thank you for taking the time to look it up!!

No prob. It might be? Is it a Russian document, or another country's document just listing the birthplace? I'm not sure if an American death registration, for example, would short-form something unfamiliar.
Would it be possible to link to the family member where this appears, so that I can see the source document?
Groff and similar is also not on this list of renamed places in Russia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_renamed_cities_and_towns_in_Russia
This list has a variety of past and present names, and the only Gro* is Grozny, in Chechna.

Here’s the ID: K4BJ-Q76
The person who added in the place said she has family records that show the birthplace as Groff, so I asked her for the records. Just waiting for a response. Otherwise, I have no idea whether or not it is an American death record or birth record or anything. Thanks!!

Thank you both! I'll just wait for my relative to get back to me so I can hopefully find something, but from the looks of it, it seems that another birthplace research project for me is due! Thank you both so much!! I appreciate the time you took to help me out!

Her parents have a marriage information of: ABT 1895 Graf (Krutoyarovka), Samara, Russia
Thus I believe your Groff was some place in Samara Governorate in the Russian Empire . I could not find that Krutoyarovka in the current map, one close one is Krotovka.

Interesting!
@Camilla Prater A few maps: https://www.volgagerman.net/graf -- Look for "Volga Wiesenseite" in large letters, and follow straight up from the "it" in the name for Graf.
That website seems to have a random selection of BMD records, and a few censuses, if you scroll to the bottom.
Also possibly of interest:

So I found Mary Bach’s obituary, which does show Groff, Russia. It was in the source box. But I also found Krutoyarovka and Samara in the standardized list. Graf still wasn’t, but that may be because it isn’t as well known. I’ll try to figure things out.
You are all amazing!! Thank you @Brett .
@NickMoreau NickMoreau @Heidi Kuosmanen for your excellent help and information!! ❤️

Wow ...

Well done ...
IF, that "Graf" is the one; and, does not have a "Standard" as a 'Place Name' in "FamilySearch"; THEN, you certainly have enough supporting "Evidence" (as 'Proof'), for a submitting a Case, that such a "Place" can (and, should) be added to the 'Place Names' Database in "FamilySearch".

I looked into Place Names Database. Actually I found out that Graf was already in the system but in Russian letters!
With all the information Brett provided I corrected the database and added the right historic period for Graf. So now you can add the correct Standard place.

WOW ...
.
How is that ...
.
Someone ( ie. 'Heidi' ) volunteering/working in the "Place Names" Database of "FamilySearch" was able to address/fix it, just like that ...
.
That does not happen every day ...
.
Many of us are still "Waiting" for the requested "Standard" for the "Place Name" we require to be actioned ... as they are in the ever increasing queue.
.
Well done ...

Hi, Welcome to wonderful world of Germans from Russia. I’m one of these. You can look at the right for the link AHSGR.org. It’s the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. The village your referee to Graf is on the Volga. I can help you get in contact with a village coordinator for Graf . I can’t think of the top of my head what records are available for this village but I can check when I get home. I’m will be driving and can check when I get home tonight. Sharistone@gmail.com

If you don’t hear from Kevin please get back to me, sharistone2007@gmail.com. I will help. There are AHSGR chapters all over , where do you live? They are a good support system. We have one in SLC. The information you will need is your oldest known ancestor name, approximate birth year and any other information. This group of people all have the same names. Check out his web site also. It might also give you some information. I’m happy to help if you need anything. Thanks, Shari Stone
