I ran it through ChatGPT and it says: "The handwriting in the image reads:
"Appointed Corporal Jan. 1st, 1863. 42nd Regiment Mo. Vols. Co. G. Reenlisted Sept. 8th, 1863, at St. Louis.""
I hope this is helpful.

Given that these are Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry records, Missouri Volunteers does not make good sense.

Do you have any information about this regiment that would show where they were throughout the Civil War? It is possible they were there when he re-enlisted and was promoted.
Just a thought.

The 49th Infantry went to Missouri; however he did not enlist until February of 1865. It sounds like these remarks are discussing his promotion, and I'm glad to have a better understanding of what it says!
Thanks, everyone.

For just a little more background, I ran another ChatGPT query about their deployment areas and got this answer:
"The Wisconsin Infantry regiments served extensively during the American Civil War, participating in numerous campaigns and battles. Their service spanned a wide geographical area, including engagements in the Western Theater and other regions. Many regiments saw action in states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
Service in Missouri
Yes, several Wisconsin Infantry regiments served in Missouri. Early in the war, Missouri was a crucial state due to its strategic location and divided loyalties, and many Union regiments were deployed there to secure the state and combat Confederate forces.
- 1st Wisconsin Infantry (Three-Months Volunteers): This regiment was stationed in Missouri for a short time, guarding railroads and participating in operations to secure the state.
- 8th Wisconsin Infantry: Known as the "Eagle Regiment" for carrying the famous war eagle "Old Abe," the 8th Wisconsin served in Missouri in 1862, participating in campaigns to suppress guerrilla activity and secure Union control.
- 9th Wisconsin Infantry: This regiment, composed primarily of German-speaking immigrants, operated in Missouri during its early service, focusing on maintaining order and combating Confederate forces and guerrillas.
- 12th Wisconsin Infantry: While this regiment saw much of its service in other states, it did spend time in Missouri during its early campaigns.
The regiments' activities in Missouri often involved guarding supply lines, railroads, and towns, as well as participating in skirmishes against Confederate forces and guerrillas. The state remained a contested area, with frequent engagements that required Union forces to maintain a strong presence."
