Can I please get the year of birth and the names of the parents? Entry July 3...Johann Christopher Masherie. I think the father is Johann Joachim Masherie, does it mention the mother and if the birth is a legitimate birth? Thanks in advance!

Yes, the father is Johann Joachim, the name of the mother is not given. There is no remark about a legitimate or illegitimate birth, however, as the father is given I would assume the Johann Joachim Chroistopher was born legitimately (or at least legitimated later).

I wonder what the surname really is. "Masherie" does not look really German. In later birth records for the children the name is spelled "Mascherie" which is a more typical German spelling, but still an unusual name in Germany.

According to Johann Joachim Christopher Mascherie's death certificate (of which I can't find now), Johann was born May 1795. He died in 1847.

He married in Midlum Germany July 23, 1819 to a German woman (see above link). Seven children born Misselwarden and Dorum - 2 died Died in Dorum, Feb 2, 1847. The marriage record shows "July 3 Den 23.ten der Junggesell Johann Joachim Christopher Masherie des weil Johann Joachim Masherie zu Neufurbaum in der Landschaft Pommern Sohn mit der Jungfrau …." Not exactly sure what that means. I'm learning German, but not that advanced yet.

Neufurbaum (or anything like it) is not in maps from that period (especially the Meyers Orts- und Verkehrs-lexikon des Deutschen Reichs). I thought I read somewhere that the pastor of the churches in that area wrote his churchbooks in January of the following year, and he made many mistakes, so it is likely that “Neufurbaum, Pommern” is also a mistake and has nothing to do with Johann? Does this even make sense?

I have so much to learn about German research. I'm just trying to confirm his birth. It seems to me that the info on the birth matches the info in the marriage. Any thoughts?

The birth year is given in the header: 1819

The full translation of the record is:

July 23 [1819] the bachelor Johann Joachim Christopher Masherie, son of the late Johann Joachim Masherie in Neufurbaum in the province Pommern with the maiden Helena Margretha Gründelmann, legitimate daughter of the late Jürgen Gründelmann, inhabitant of Dorum. Were married at home.

I am still confounded by the name Masherie/Mascherie and also by the place name Neufurbaum. I, too, couldn't find anything like Neufurbaum. Pommern seems to be rather far away from Dorum.

In Ancestry.com the only people in Germany with the last name Mas(c)herie seem to be decendants of Johann Joachim Christopher. So it is still a mystery for me where he originally came from.
